Fault codes / SPN 2898
Without FMI this is not a diagnosis. SAE J1939 SPN 2898 is Engine Start Enable Device 2 Configuration (none / glow plugs / fuelled start / ether / electric intake air heater) — a config parameter, not a burnt grid. Weichai ECU tables reuse SPN 2898 with FMI 15/16/17/18/7 as intake-heater grid voltage (P001A–P001E). The live heater driver is usually SPN 729. No OEM in this card.
Which trucks see it
WP6–WP13 on Howo, Shacman, some Sitrak. Chinese scanners often drop the FMI. If the screen shows 2898/17, that is P001D, not this blind card.
Symptoms
- scanner shows 2898 only
- hard winter start — not proof of a dead grid
- MIL with no derate when warm
Likely causes
- Confirmed SAE: config, not a fault.
- Weichai grid-voltage family only with FMI.
- Field heater circuit is SPN 729 more often.
What to check
- Get the FMI.
- FMI 15–18/7 → P001A–P001E chain.
- Winter no-heat → also SPN 729. Do not order a grid from 2898 alone.
Can you keep driving
You can drive. In frost, do not soak a cold engine until FMI is known. Home form accepts 2898, 2898/17 and P001D.
